Dual-function paper-based biosensor for sensitive detection of hyaluronidase and human papillomavirus DNA using diffusion wet area as readout.

Biosens Bioelectron

Herein, a novel dual-function paper-based biosensor using diffusion wet area as readout has been developed for simple and sensitive detection of hyaluronidase (HAase) and human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 DNA, respectively. The target-regulated-water absorption hydrogel synthesized by hyaluronic acid (HA) and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) is chosen as an ideal material for diffusion wet area generation on paper. The hydrogel can be degraded through the enzymolysis of HA by HAase or the trans-cleavage of ssDNA by HPV DNA-activated CRISPR/cas12a system.

Cancer has a high rate of incidence and mortality throughout the world. Although several conventional approaches have been developed for the treatment of cancer, such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and thermal therapy, they have remarkable disadvantages which result in inefficient treatment of cancer. For example, immunogenicity, prolonged treatment, non-specificity, metastasis and high cost of treatment, are considered as the major drawbacks of chemotherapy.

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of nosocomial implant-associated infections, causing significant morbidity and mortality, underscoring the need for rapid, non-invasive, and cost-effective diagnostics. Here, we optimise the synthesis of renal-clearable gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) for enhanced catalytic activity with the aim of developing a sensitive colourimetric diagnostic for bacterial infection. All-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations confirm the stability of glutathione-coated AuNCs and surface access for peroxidase-like activity in complex physiological environments.

In this study, the ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced skin photoaging inhibitory activity of pomegranate peel extract with increased ellagic acid content through enzymatic hydrolysis was evaluated in HaCaT cells. Among various enzymes, Viscozyme with high tannase and β-glucosidase activities was used, and 1.0 % Viscozyme was added to hydrolyze pomegranate peel for 2 h at 40°C to establish the optimal reaction conditions for high ellagic acid content.

Brain abscess caused by Streptococcus pyogenes with atypical symptoms: a case report and literature review.

BMC Pediatr

November 2024

Department of Pediatric Surgery, The Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, National Clinical Research Center for Child Health, Hangzhou, 310003, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Streptococcus pyogenes, a common gram-positive bacterium, can cause rare brain abscesses in children, often without acute symptoms.
  • A case was presented where a healthy child showed decreased muscle strength due to a GAS brain abscess, leading to successful surgical treatment and antibiotic therapy after isolating the bacteria.
  • The study highlights the importance of recognizing mild symptoms of GAS brain abscesses for early diagnosis and treatment, which are critical for ensuring a good prognosis.
