Purpose: Treatment of antibiotic-resistant Gram-positive infections (GPIs), including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is becoming increasingly difficult, particularly in patients with multiple co-morbidities who require antibiotics with greater safety and a consistent pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) profile. Such difficult-to-treat GPIs are often associated with poor outcomes, extended hospital stay and increased expenditure. This can be partly attributed to the limited safety and aberrant PK/PD profile of existing anti-MRSA antibiotics.

Background: Unhealthy prenatal lifestyle behaviours are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, but little is known about what motivates women to comply with preconceptional lifestyle recommendations or consciously plan their pregnancy. Therefore, the objective of this study is to explore the associations between preconceptional lifestyle behaviours, health beliefs and pregnancy planning among Dutch pregnant women.

It is important that negative, as well as positive, studies be published to complete the available picture in areas of scientific inquiry. At the same time, it is critical that the implications of a negative study not be overstated and generalized when major issues of study design and data accuracy may be the reason that no relationship was discovered. The challenge of avoiding type II errors in interpreting negative findings has major public health implications, especially when the relationship of an exposure to birth defects is the concern.
