Protozoa-enhanced conjugation frequency alters the dissemination of soil antibiotic resistance.

ISME J

January 2025

State Key Laboratory for Ecological Security of Regions and Cities, Ningbo Urban Environment Observation and Research Station, Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1799 Jimei Road, Xiamen 361021, China.

Protozoa, as primary predators of soil bacteria, represent an overlooked natural driver in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes. However, the effects of protozoan predation on antibiotic resistance genes dissemination at the community level, along with the underlying mechanisms, remain unclear. Here we used fluorescence-activated cell sorting, qPCR, combined with metagenomics and reverse transcription quantitative PCR, to unveil how protozoa (Colpoda steinii and Acanthamoeba castellanii) influence the plasmid-mediated transfer of antibiotic resistance genes to soil microbial communities.

Super-Resolved Mapping of Electrochemical Reactivity in Single 3D Catalysts.

Nano Lett

January 2025

Institute of Nanochemistry and Nanobiology, School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering, Shanghai University, Shanghai 200444, P.R. China.

Crystals with three-dimensional (3D) stereoscopic structures, characterized by diverse shapes, crystallographic planes, and morphologies, represent a significant advancement in catalysis. Differentiating and quantifying the catalytic activity of specific surface facets and sites at the single-particle level is essential for understanding and predicting catalytic performance. This study employs super-resolution radial fluctuations electrogenerated chemiluminescence microscopy (SRRF-ECLM) to achieve high-resolution mapping of electrocatalytic activity on individual 3D CuO crystals, including cubic, octahedral, and truncated octahedral structures.

Background: Radiation therapy (RT) treats primary and metastatic brain tumors, with about one million Americans surviving beyond six months post-treatment. However, up to 90% of survivors experience RT-induced cognitive impairment. Emerging evidence links cognitive decline to RT-induced endothelial dysfunction in brain microvessels, yet studies of endothelial injury remain limited.

Background: The Arp2/3 complex is a key regulator of tumor metastasis, and targeting its subunits offers potential for anti-metastatic therapy. However, the expression profiles, prognostic relevance, and diagnostic value of its subunits across cancers remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the clinical relevance of Arp2/3 complex subunits, particularly ARPC1A, in pan-cancer, and to further analyze the potential biological mechanisms of ARPC1A, as well as its association with immune infiltration and chemotherapy drug sensitivity.

Age-related cataracts (ARCs) are associated with increased oxidative stress and cellular senescence. Our objective is to investigate the function of Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) within ARCs. In ARCs tissues and HO-treated lens epithelial cells (LECs), the expression levels of SIRT1 were examined.
