  • Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) have made hepatitis C treatment much easier, but there’s limited info on how they work for patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PDd).
  • A study looked at 2754 HCV-positive patients from 2015 to 2023, focusing on 38 with confirmed G6PDd, while monitoring their health closely during and after treatment.

Servicio de Anestesiología, Reanimación y Terapéutica del dolor, Hospital Universitario de Valme, Sevilla, Spain.

Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency is the most common enzyme disease of red blood cells, with around 400 million people suffering from it throughout the world and linked to the X chromosome inheritance, thus it predominantly affects men. Glucose 6-phosphate-dehydrogenase participates in the pentose-phosphate pathway, being responsible for cellular metabolism and the production of antioxidants. A deficiency of this enzyme alters its ability to protect red blood cells from oxidative stress caused by certain drugs, metabolic conditions, infections and food.

The aim of the present report was to present a review of the literature in this disease, to describe a case report concerning an affected 9-year-old male, and to review the main implications and precautions in pediatric dental management.
