Consideration on autoimmunity began, as did immunology itself, around year 1900, first with Ehrlich's doctrine of 'horror autotoxicus', then interpreted as 'autoimmunity cannot happen'. Yet by 1904 the antibody nature of the autohemolysin responsible for cold hemoglobinuria was described, and soon confirmed, but without generating any durable concept on autoimmunization as a cause of disease. Reasons included Ehrlich's doctrine, the particular directions that immunology was to take after the initial advances, and a greater preoccupation with bodily responses to extrinsic rather than autologous substances.

Incidence of symptomatic bronchiectasis (BR) occurs in around 2% in patients with late rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Its seems that the association BR-RA could be a worsening factor for outcome of RA patients. A 58-year-old woman without dry syndrome, suffering from bronchial purulence over one year was admitted to the Department of Pneumology for hemoptysis and arthritis (knees, ankles, and wrists).

Juxta-articular osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an early and specific pathology in this disease, however in RA patients there are also factors predisposing for the development of the generalised bone atrophy. 103 female patients with the diagnosis of RA established according to ACR criteria were included in the study. Its aim was to evaluate the generalised osteoporosis incidence in women suffering from RA as well as to find out how osteoporosis was related to certain clinical symptoms and laboratory findings, the disease process activity, and the treatment used.

The clinical and biochemical correlations with joint damage progression over two years in a consecutive group of 68 patients with rheumatoid arthritis with disease duration of less than two years are reported. Joint damage was assessed with Larsen's severity scale and a measure of change in progression rate constructed. Initial haemoglobin concentration, Ritchie index, and Waaler-Rose titre in combination accounted for one third of the variance in joint damage progression.
