Article Synopsis
  • Recent years have seen a rise in the use of classical psychedelics in Australia, but there’s limited knowledge about their toxicity levels.
  • A study analyzed calls to the New South Wales Poisons Information Centre from 2014 to 2022 regarding psychedelic exposures, revealing a total of 737 calls primarily concerning LSD and psilocybin.

N,N-Diformylmescaline: A novel analogue of mescaline detected in Queensland.

Drug Test Anal

February 2023

Queensland Health Forensic and Scientific Services (QHFSS), Brisbane, Australia.

N,N-Diformylmescaline, a novel analogue of mescaline, has recently been detected in Australia in two unrelated seizures. To confirm the identification, a three-step synthesis from 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenylacetic acid was devised. However, purification of the final product proved problematic with the compound prone to degradation in solution.

Designer drugs, chemically altered compounds derived from federally controlled substances, have become a major cause of addiction and overdose deaths. These drugs include mescaline analogs, synthetic opioids, arylhexylamines, methaqualone derivatives and crack, a new form of cocaine. Sudden changes in mood, weight loss, depression, disturbed sleep patterns, deteriorating school or work performance, marital problems, and loss of interest in friends and social activities may be signs of drug addiction.

Behavioral effects of zopiclone were investigated in mice and rats and compared with the data on diazepam, nitrazepam and flurazepam. The electroencephalographic effect of the drug was also examined in unanesthetized rabbits with chronic electrode implants and compared with that of diazepam. The present results indicate that zopiclone possesses pharmacological properties qualitatively similar to benzodiazepines, which are characterized by potent anticonflict and antiaggressive effects and much weaker anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, ataxiogenic, sedative and anesthesia potentiating effects; the properties of this drug were compared with those of diazepam, nitrazepam and flurazepam.
