Background And Aims: The fundamental mechanisms involved in the genesis and progression of heart failure are not clearly understood. The present study was conducted to analyze the cardiac mitochondrial involvement in heart failure, the possible parallelism between cardiac and skeletal muscle and if there is a link between clinical symptoms and mitochondrial damage.
Methods: Left ventricle and pectoral biopsies were obtained from patients with heart failure (n: 21) and patients with inter-auricular communication as the unique diagnosis for surgery (n: 6).

Objective: To investigate the effect of beating heart intracardiac procedures on postoperative cognitive function and S100b release.
Methods: Fifty-one patients, aged 15 - 45, were divided into 2 groups to undergo intracardiac procedures under the conditions of cardiac arrest (n = 29, including 14 isolated valve replacement patients and 14 interauricular or interventricular septum repair patients) or beating heart (n = 23, all undergoing interauricular or interventricular septum repair). Before the operation and 7 days after the operation, a battery of neuropsychological tests, using trail making test, Wechsler memory scale, and Wechsler adult intelligence scale, was conducted.

Introduction: Bacterial tracheitis is a cause of severe upper respiratory airway obstruction. It has been considered a rare entity whose clinical and epidemiological features are not well known.
Patients And Methods: The medical records of children diagnosed with bacterial tracheitis and admitted to our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) from June 1992 to May 2004 (12 years) were analyzed.

POSSIBLITIES FOR PROGNOSTIC IMPROVEMENT: The inter-auricular communication (IAC) is the most frequent of congential malformations in adults and is responsible for enhanced morbidity and rduction in life expectancy. The closure of an IAC with volumic overload eradicates such morbidity and mortality. The technical progress in the conception of prosthesises that obstrue the interauricular communications via the percutaneous route make this technique a reliable alternative to surgery that, itself, leads to a certain degree of discomfort and considerable morbidity.

The clinical observation of a 74 year old male presenting isolated Wernicke's aphasia due to a temporal left infarction of cardiac embolic origin secondary to paroxysmal auricular flutter is described. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance provided characteristic images which permitted the establishment of the diagnosis of lipomatous hypertrophy of the interauricular septum without requiring the use of invasive techniques. Lipomatous hypertrophy of the interauricular septum is a cardiac tumor of unusual presentation constituted of an abnormal accumulation of non-encapsulated fatty tissue which occupies a thickness greater than 15 mm of the interauricular septum.
