Biliary duct reconstruction is one of the most challenging parts of liver transplantation and accounts for 40%-60% of complications. While current stent-based devices on the market show promising results in reducing complications, they are manufactured from permanent synthetic materials and require a second reintervention for their removal. This exposes the patients to other potential complications and increases healthcare costs.

Enantioselective ecotoxicity of promethazine in two freshwater organisms: daphnia (Daphnia magna) and zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Environ Toxicol Chem

January 2025

Laboratory of Organic Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals, Department of Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal.

Chiral pharmaceuticals, racemic or enantiomerically pure forms and their metabolites, can reach aquatic ecosystems via wastewater effluents (inefficient treatment operations) or by direct human disposal. They may negatively affect nontarget organisms even at low environmental concentrations. To make an accurate risk evaluation, the (eco)toxicity of both enantiomers needs to be assessed.

Ultraviolet (UV) C light emitted by a krypton chloride (KrCl) lamp consists of mainly less harmful 222-nm Far-UVC (unfiltered 222-mm Far-UVC) compared with conventionally used 254-nm UVC. It also contains wavelengths that are harmful to mammalian cells. By contrast, UVC from a KrCl lamp with optical filter (filtered 222-nm Far-UVC) consists of much less harmful 222-nm Far-UVC and is available for sterilization of dwelling spaces.

The inner ear of teleost fishes is known to serve both auditory and vestibular functions. Many studies have compared otoliths from different species and attempted to understand the observed differences within the light of environmental factors. However, experimental data on how otoliths could adapt are scarce.

Palygorskite exhibits distinctive morphological and textural characteristics due to its fibrous and micropore nature. This research experimentally investigates the microstructure of palygorskite and how acid treatment changes the fibrous shape and ability to adsorb. Acetic and hydrochloric acid were used to study the effect of acid on palygorskite fibrous morphology.
