Background: The limited and detailed literature on total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA), as well as the clinical indications for unilateral ovariectomy in llamas, are not well-defined. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the anesthetic events and the surgical intervention in this species.
Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate the intraoperative physiological and clinical parameters in llamas undergoing unilateral ovariectomy, under three protocols of TIVA.

In this study, epilepsy with focal seizures progressing to generalized seizures was diagnosed in a 6-month-old Holstein heifer. The seizures were characterized by a brief pre-ictal phase with depression and vocalization. During the ictal phase eyelid spasms, tongue contractions, nodding and abundant salivation were observed, rapidly followed by a convulsive phase with bilateral tonic, clonic or tonic-clonic activity and loss of consciousness.

Just 3 disease-modifying treatments-edaravone, riluzole, and sodium phenylbutyrate and taurursodiol (PB/TURSO)-are currently FDA approved to slow progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A fourth therapy has been recently approved under accelerated approval and is contingent upon verification of clinical benefit in confirmatory trials(s). Therapy selection is based largely upon patient characteristics, as guidelines have not been updated since the recent approval of PB/TURSO or accelerated approval of tofersen.
