Effectiveness of active middle ear implant placement methods in pathological conditions: basilar membrane vibration simulation.

Front Neurol

August 2024

Department of Mechanical and Intelligent Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Informatics and Engineering, The University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan.

Active middle ear implants (AMEI) amplify mechanical vibrations in the middle ear and transmit them to the cochlea. The AMEI includes a floating mass transducer (FMT) that can be placed using two different surgical approaches: "oval window (OW) vibroplasty" and "round window (RW) vibroplasty." The OW and RW are windows located on the cochlea.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers examined temporal bones from donors with otosclerosis to assess RW obliteration and its relation to other otosclerosis patterns.
  • * Findings indicate a significant rate of RW involvement, with continuous lesions from the oval window leading to complete RW obliteration, potentially improving future prognostic evaluations for otosclerosis patients.

Synchrotron Phase-Contrast Imaging and Cochlear Otosclerosis: A Case Report.

Audiol Neurootol

December 2024

Department of Surgical Sciences, Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden.

Introduction: Otosclerosis is a bone disorder affecting the labyrinthine capsule that leads to conductive and occasionally sensorineural hearing loss. The etiology of otosclerosis remains unknown; factors such as infection, hormones, inflammation, genetics, and autoimmunity have been discussed. Treatment consists primarily of surgical stapes replacement and cochlear implantation.

Endoscopic-Assisted Cochlear Implantation in Far Advanced Otosclerosis.

Otol Neurotol

June 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University, Zagazig, Egypt.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of cochlear implantation (CI) in case of far advanced otosclerosis and to evaluate the value of using intraoperative otoendoscopy to facilitate the identification of the round window membrane and the scala tympani without the need to remove the posterior canal wall or to perform a subtotal petrosectomy.

Study Design: Retrospective case-series study.

Setting: Tertiary academic CI center.
