Polymyxin B haemoperfusion is commonly used to adsorb endotoxins in septic shock caused by Gram-negative bacterial infections. Polymyxin B haemoperfusion has been reported to improve hypotension in Gram-positive bacterial infections; however, its efficacy and mechanism in treating such cases are unclear. We hypothesised that polymyxin B haemoperfusion would be equally effective in improving haemodynamics during Gram-positive bacterial infections as in Gram-negative bacterial infections.

Polymyxins are last-resort antimicrobial peptides administered clinically against multi-drug resistant bacteria, specifically in the case of Gram-negative species. However, an increasing number of these pathogens employ a defense strategy that involves a relay of enzymes encoded by the pmrE (ugd) loci and the arnBCDTEF operon. The pathway modifies the lipid-A component of the outer membrane (OM) lipopolysaccharide (LPS) by adding a 4-amino-4-deoxy-l-arabinose (L-Ara4N) headgroup, which renders polymyxins ineffective.

An intriguing aspect of restrictive cardiomyopathies (RCM) is the microbiome role in the natural history of the disease. These cardiomyopathies are often difficult to diagnose and so result in significant morbidity and mortality. The human microbiome, composed of billions of microorganisms, influences various physiological and pathological processes, including cardiovascular health.

Background: A stable and reproducible experimental bacterial pneumonia model postintracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is necessary to help investigating the pathogenesis and novel treatments of Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP).
Aim: To establish a Gram-negative bacterial pneumonia-complicating ICH rat model and an acute lung injury (ALI)-complicating ICH rat model.
Methods: We established two standardized models of post-ICH pneumonia by nasal inoculation with () or intratracheal inoculation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
