The G-protein α subunit i (Gαi) family represents the most common GPCR-coupling partner and consists of eight subunits with distinct signaling properties. X-ray fiber diffraction analysis (FDA) of the fibrous macromolecules in hair, nails and skin has been shown to non-invasively diagnose various cancers, at sites remote from the cancer, years before the cancer becomes clinically apparent. The technology is not widely accepted because of reproducibility issues (that can be easily resolved) and lack of an explanation as to how a clinically unapparent tumor can leave molecular "signatures" at remote sites. However, there is evidence that tumor-specific cathepsins (lysosomal proteases) circulate systemically long before a cancer is clinically apparent.

Two interesting aspects of cell lines grown in 3 Dimensional (3D) conditions are their distinct morphology and production of extracellular matrix (ECM). Also, it is known that 3D aggregates have different susceptibilities to damage-inducing agents compared to their 2D monolayer counterparts. We describe the effect of ECM on 3D aggregate morphology, the effect of cisplatin, bleomycin, and UV on the 3D aggregates and 2 Dimensional (2D) monolayers of the BMG-1 cell line.

Bluetongue virus (BTV) is transmitted by Culicoides sp. biting midges to livestock, causing severe hemorrhagic disease in sheep, but is asymptomatic in the insect host. Similarly, BTV causes rapid cell death in infected mammalian cells in culture, whereas infections of insect cells are long-term and unapparent, despite productive virus replication.
