Impact of smoking on oral mucosa: A cytological and cellular proliferation study.

Tissue Cell

January 2025

Laboratory Medicine Department, Faculty of Applied Medical Science, University of Al Baha, Saudi Arabia. Electronic address:

Background: Cigarette smoking is known to induce various cellular changes and proliferative activities within the oral mucosa. This study compares the effects of smoking on cellular proliferation and cytological alterations using the AgNORs and Pap staining methods.

Methods: We performed statistical analyses to evaluate the mean AgNORs count in smokers and non- smokers.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) underpins approximately 90% of squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the anus and perianal region. These tumors usually arise in association with precursor lesions such anal intraepithelial neoplasia/ high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (AIN 3/ HSIL), whereas a small subset of HPV-negative cancers may harbor mutations in TP53. Recently, vulvar lesions termed differentiated exophytic vulvar intraepithelial lesion/vulvar acanthosis with altered differentiated (DEVIL/VAAD) have been recognized as HPV-independent, TP53 wild-type precursors for vulvar carcinoma; however, analogous anal lesions have not been described.

Nuclear pseudoinclusion is associated with BRAFV600E mutation: Analysis of nuclear features in papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Ann Diagn Pathol

January 2025

Department of Anatomical Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia/Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta 14320, Indonesia; Human Cancer Research Center-Indonesian Medical Education and Research Institute, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta 14320, Indonesia.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most prevalent thyroid neoplasm, classified into BRAF-like and RAS-like subtypes. Nuclear alterations serve as a diagnostic criterion of PTC and are fully manifested in BRAF-like. This single-center retrospective study aimed to assess the different presentation of nuclear features in 40 samples of BRAFV600E- and 40 samples of RAS-mutated PTCs using both bivariate and multivariate analytic approaches.

Correlation of Histologic Features with Gene Alterations in Pleural Mesothelioma.

Mod Pathol

January 2025

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York, 10065, USA. Electronic address:

Histologic features, including architectural patterns, cytologic features, and 2021 World Health Organization nuclear grade have been shown to have prognostic significance in epithelioid diffuse pleural mesothelioma (DPM). Biphasic and sarcomatoid DPM, regardless of morphology, have worse outcomes. These prognostic findings are well-established but correlation of architectural patterns, cytologic features, and nuclear grade with genetic alterations has not been well studied.

Background: The study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combined anlotinib and EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who had gradual, oligo, or potential progression after previous EGFR-TKIs treatment.

Methods: We conducted an open-label, single-arm, multicenter, phase II trial in China. Eligible patients were 18-75 years old with histologically or cytologically confirmed NSCLC who were EGFR mutation positive and showed gradual, oligo, or potential progression after EGFR-TKIs.
