Background: Umbilical cord blood (CB) units stored in banks are an important source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation and other cell therapies. New applications, such as their use in transfusions, require rapid quality release as cord blood red blood cells (CB-RBC) have a shorter shelf life.
Study Design And Methods: This project aims to investigate the most prevalent microbial contaminants in CB preparations and validate a rapid sterility testing strategy for CB-RBC based on an automated system (BACT/ALERT®) in tandem with a molecular assay (real-time PCR) capable of detecting at least 100 CFU/mL of Cutibacterium acnes in CB-RBC to accelerate the detection of the most common slow-growing bacteria.

Background: Children treated for cancer are at risk for adverse effects of iron due to transfusions administered during prolonged marrow suppression, which may increase exposure to toxic forms of iron, extrahepatic iron accumulation, and long-term organ damage.
Objective: This study aimed to characterize the severity and organ distribution of clinically significant, multisystem iron overload (IO) in an at-risk cohort of pediatric cancer patients.
Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study of childhood cancer patients who underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to clinical concern for IO.

Arboviruses represent a threat to transfusion safety for several reasons: the presence of vectors and the notification of autochthonous cases in our region, the recent increase in the number of cases transmitted through blood and/or blood component transfusion, the high prevalence rates of RNA of the main arboviruses in asymptomatic blood donors, and their ability to survive processing and storage in the different blood components. In an epidemic outbreak caused by an arbovirus in our region, transfusion centres can apply different measures: reactive measures, related to donor selection or arbovirus screening, and proactive measures, such as pathogen inactivation methods. The study of the epidemiology of the main arboviruses and understanding the effectiveness of the different measures that we can adopt are essential to ensure that our blood components remain safe.

ABO typing is essential for preventing ABO incompatibility transfusion reactions. Discrepancy exists when reactions in forward grouping do not match with reverse grouping. Any discrepancies reported should be investigated so that correct blood group is reported minimizing the chances of transfusion reaction.
