This systematic review summarizes the available evidence on respiratory muscle endurance training involving voluntary isocapnic hyperpnoea among patients with chronic diseases. It includes both randomized and non-randomized controlled trials implementing this exercise training modality performed either alone or in combination with other interventions. It was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), Embase, CINAHL, CENTRAL, Cochrane and ReeDOC.

Postural hyperventilation has been implicated as a cause of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), yet the precise mechanisms underlying the heightened breathing response remain unclear. This study challenges current hypotheses by revealing that exaggerated peripheral chemoreceptor activity is not the primary driver of postural hyperventilation. Instead, significant contributions from reduced stroke volume and compromised brain perfusion during orthostatic stress were identified.

Chronic hypoxia (CH) during postnatal development attenuates the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) in mammals, but there are conflicting reports on whether this plasticity is permanent or reversible. This study tested the hypothesis that CH-induced respiratory plasticity is reversible in neonatal rats and investigated whether the initial plasticity or recovery differs between sexes. Rat pups were exposed to 3 d of normobaric CH (12 % O) beginning shortly after birth.

Pregnancy is associated with major changes in hormonal status, anatomy and physiology involving all systems of a human organism. This narrative review focuses on the most recent data concerning lung function changes during healthy pregnancy. The major findings are as follows: pregnancy is associated with a reduction in static lung volumes reaching 20% of residual functional capacity; it is also associated with chronic alveolar hyperventilation; lastly, it is not associated with significant changes in variables measured by spirometry such as vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second and peak expiratory flow, or airway resistance.
