Trend in serological and molecular diagnostic methods for Toxoplasma gondii infection.

Eur J Med Res

October 2024

Health Park Co., Ltd, Seoul, 02447, Republic of Korea.

Background: Toxoplasma gondii, an intracellular parasite, is a significant cause of zoonotic disease, with an estimated one-third of the world's human population believed to be infected. Article Synopsis
  • Timely diagnosis of leptospirosis is crucial for preventing severe health outcomes in both humans and animals, and current diagnostic methods have limitations that necessitate new approaches.
  • This study explores a novel diagnostic tool using a recombinant lipoprotein (rErpY-LIC11966) in a latex agglutination test (LAT), which was developed and tested for its effectiveness in diagnosing animal leptospirosis.
  • The rErpY-LAT demonstrated high diagnostic performance, with 90.6% sensitivity, 89.1% specificity, and 90% overall accuracy, making it a promising field-applicable option for early serodiagnosis of the disease.

This case report explores the utility of monitoring automated rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test results in both serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from a patient undergoing treatment for neurosyphilis. Syphilis treatment is based on the rapid plasma reagin (RPR) and syphilis treponema antibody levels, and in the case of RPR-positive syphilis, a 1/4 reduction in the RPR value by the manual card test is considered curative. However, it should be noted that when RPR is followed by the manual card test, there may seem to be no reduction when the automated method shows a steady reduction.

Article Synopsis
  • * In 2021, a strain of B. pseudomallei was isolated from a goat in New Caledonia, which was genetically similar to local human strains, indicating potential animal-to-human transmission risks.
  • * This case marks the first confirmed instance of melioidosis in an animal in New Caledonia, underscoring the need for collaboration among health professionals to monitor and prevent the disease in both animals and humans.

This study investigated the occurrence of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella spp. and their antimicrobial susceptibility from ducks and indigenous chickens in major live-bird markets at Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Thirty-one cloacae samples were each collected from both ducks and indigenous chickens in three different sample locations for a total of 186 cloacae swab samples.
