Infections caused by antibiotic-drug-resistant microorganisms are a major global health concern, and they result in millions of deaths every year. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of such drug-resistant microbial strains, and new and effective antimicrobial agents are desperately needed to combat infections caused by MRSA. In the search for effective anti-MRSA agents, the leaves of Citrus grandis (Rutaceae), also known as C.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli-targeting phages for biofilm biocontrol in the poultry industry.

Vet Microbiol

January 2025

Department of Biotechnology and Food Microbiology, Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences, Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, Poland. Electronic address:

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) is a principal etiologic agent of avian colibacillosis, responsible for significant economic losses in the poultry industry due to high mortality and disease treatment with antibiotics. APEC and its ability to form biofilms on food and processing surfaces contributes to its persistence within farms. Bacteriophages are promising antibacterial agents for combating APEC.

Small RNA CjNC110 regulates the activated methyl cycle to enable optimal chicken colonization by .

January 2025

Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, USA.

Post-transcriptional gene regulation by non-coding small RNAs (sRNAs) is critical for colonization and survival of enteric pathogens, including the zoonotic pathogen . In this study, we utilized IA3902 (a representative isolate of the sheep abortion clone) and W7 (a highly motile variant of NCTC 11168, a human gastroenteritis strain) to further investigate regulation by sRNA CjNC110. Both motility and autoagglutination ability were confirmed to be phenotypes of conserved regulation by CjNC110.

New haloaminopyrazole derivatives differing in the number of pyrazole nuclei - and -, respectively, were synthesized and characterized by H-NMR, C-NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and elemental analysis. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction method was used to describe compounds and . When tested on normal NCTC fibroblasts in vitro, the newly synthesized derivatives were shown to be non-cytotoxic at a dosage of 25 μg/mL.

Expanding the complex: phylogenomic insights, proposal of sp. nov. and reclassification of two species.

Int J Syst Evol Microbiol

December 2024

Public Health Laboratory Division, District of Columbia Department of Forensic Sciences, Washington, District of Columbia, USA.

A novel species was isolated as a contaminant in viral transport media at the District of Columbia Department of Forensic Sciences Public Health Laboratory. Phylogenomic and biochemical analyses of the isolate determined that it represented a novel species within . Related strains in public genome databases suggested that this novel species is associated with clinically acquired infections, similar to closely related .
