Extremal structures with embedded prefailure indicators.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

February 2025

Department of Construction Sciences, Lund University, Lund SE-22100, Sweden.

Preemptive identification of potential failure under loading of engineering structures is a critical challenge. Our study presents an innovative approach to design built-in prefailure indicators within multiscale structural designs with optimized load carrying capabilities utilizing the design freedom of topology optimization. The indicators are engineered to visibly signal load conditions approaching the global critical buckling load at predefined locations.

Plastic responses to past environments shape adaptation to novel selection pressures.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

February 2025

Molecular Ecology and Evolution Group, School of Environmental and Natural Sciences, Bangor University, Bangor LL57 2UW, United Kingdom.

Phenotypic plasticity may pave the way for rapid adaptation to newly encountered environments. Although it is often contested, there is growing evidence that initial plastic responses of ancestral populations to new environmental cues may promote subsequent adaptation. However, we do not know whether plasticity to cues present in the ancestral habitat (past-cue plasticity) can facilitate adaptation to novel cues.

[An update on surgical treatment options for inflammatory bowel disease].

Inn Med (Heidelb)

January 2025

Klinik für Allgemein‑, Viszeral- und Thoraxchirurgie, Klinikum Darmstadt GmbH, Grafenstraße 9, 64283, Darmstadt, Deutschland.

There are national and international guidelines and developments for the surgery of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that contribute to better patient care. Important recommendations include increasingly individualized and minimally invasive approaches with the integration of new technologies. The indication for abdominal surgery remains tied to specialization, not least in order to continue to be able to assess the importance of sequential treatment and multimodality in improving surgical results and minimizing risks.

Background: Minimally invasive ventral rectopexy has widely become the preferred prolapse procedure. However there have been recent concerns regarding the safety of permanent synthetic mesh in the pelvis. Biologic grafts have also been commonly used as an alternative prosthesis, but data on their safety and the longevity of the prolapse repair have been lacking.
