Colistin methanesulfonate (CMS) is a cyclic polypeptide antibiotic with neurotoxic side effects. Sevoflurane (Sevo), an inhaled anesthetic, is known to enhance the non-depolarizing effect of neuromuscular relaxants; however, its mechanism of action is unclear. In this study, we investigated the augmentation effect of Sevo on CMS-induced neurotoxicity We prepared a sciatic nerve-skeletal muscle stimulation model using Sprague-Dawley male rats administered CMS with or without Sevo.

Article Synopsis
  • The analysis of mouse superior cervical ganglion revealed that the majority of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors are made up of α3β4, α3β4α5, and α3β4β2 subunits.
  • Experiments on α5β4-KO and α5β2-KO mice showed that while CAP amplitude remained the same, the stimulation threshold was significantly higher in α5β4-KO ganglia, suggesting altered synaptic transmission.
  • Additionally, the blocking agent hexamethonium was most effective in α5β4-KO ganglia, indicating that a large population of receptors at the SCG neuron surface consists of α3β4α5, in contrast to earlier immunoprecipitation

The present study reports Gas chromatographic mass analysis (GC-MS) as well as important biological activities of Cymbopogon proximus essential oil. The chemical composition of the essential oil of Cymbopogon proximus was investigated by GC-MS. Furthermore, the effects of Cymbopogon proximus essential oil on the cardiac parasympathetic ganglia in rats, the intra-tracheal pressure in guinea-pigs and on carrageenan-induced inflammation in the rats paw, were studied.

Although exogenous and endogenous cannabinoid receptor agonists have well-documented inhibitory effects on gastrointestinal motility, a TRPV1 receptor-mediated excitatory action of anandamide (arachidonoyl ethanolamide, AEA) in the guinea-pig ileum strip has also been described. We used in vitro capsaicin desensitization for assessing the possible participation of sensory neurons in the contractile effect of anandamide on the guinea-pig whole ileum, as well as autonomic drugs and a cyclooxygenase inhibitor for characterizing this response. Isolated organ experiments were used with isotonic recording.

Aim: To evaluate the impact of extracellular and intracellular Ca2+ on contractions induced by ethanol in smooth muscle.

Methods: Longitudinal smooth muscle strips were prepared from the gastric fundi of mice. The contractions of smooth muscle strips were recorded with an isometric force displacement transducer.
