Tracheobronchial neoplasms are much less common than lung parenchymal neoplasms but can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. They include a broad differential of both malignant and benign entities, extending far beyond more commonly known pathologic conditions such as squamous cell carcinoma and carcinoid tumor. Airway lesions may be incidental findings at imaging or manifest with symptoms related to airway narrowing or mucosal irritation, invasion of adjacent structures, or distant metastatic disease.

Chondroma is a rare benign tumor of the cartilage and occurs in the tracheobronchial tree, either isolated or as part of the Carney triad. It has been sparsely described in the literature, and some were mislabeled as hamartomas. We herein report a case of a 63-year-old female who was initially treated for community-acquired right middle lobe pneumonia.

We conducted a review of all the bronchoscopies performed at our institutions for benign tumors from 1980 to 1991 to determine the endoscopic characteristics of these lesions. We reviewed the charts, the endoscopic characteristics from our video records, and finally the pathologic findings of these cases. We tried to identify the effectiveness of laser resections in each group.

All 27 patients had an intraluminal lesion of the trachea or major bronchi. Respiratory obstruction was the main clinical manifestation of the tracheal tumors.

A patient is described who required surgical treatment for this abnormality on three separate occasions over a nineteen-year period.
