One hundred and twenty-seven patients with previously untreated carcinoma of the uterine cervix underwent pretreatment laparotomy between 1971 and 1980. Thirty-one were found to have paraaortic metastasis. Twenty-seven patients received paraaortic node external supervoltage radiation to the entire paraaortic chain, 4400 cGy, over 4 1/2 weeks, with 600-800 cGy, boost over 1 week, limited to the area of metastasis as marked at laparotomy.

Supervoltage radiotherapy was used in 21 orbits of 19 patients with idiopathic inflammatory orbital pseudotumor. Seventeen orbits (15 patients) were initially treated with systemic corticosteroids, but recurrence of orbital inflammation during dosage tapering was the most frequent indication for radiotherapy. Fifteen orbits (14 patients) responded favorably, as judged by reduced proptosis, decreased lid edema and conjunctival injection, improved ocular motility, and increased visual acuity.

Seven breast cancer patients received supervoltage radiation therapy in the Department of Radiation Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital from 1970--1978 for ureteral-periureteral metastases. Urinary symptoms (flank pain, urgency, hematuria) disappeared completely and permanently for four of five patients; abnormal pyelograms returned completely to normal for three of three; and abnormal renal function tests for two of two. Six of seven patients survived at least one year after irradiation.

About 80% of carcinomatous lesions of the lip are smaller than 2 cm in diameter, have little tendency to infiltrate, grow in the lower lip, are histologically well differentiated and do not have, or develop later, regional metastases. Of these carcinomas 95% are cured by the various methods of radiotherapy. The criteria for a more serious prognosis, such as expansive growth, deeper infiltration, location on the upper lip and/or the commissures, undifferentiated grading and regional lymphatic metastases, are found only in a minority of patients with carcinoma of the lip.
