Postdoctoral training is a career stage often described as a demanding and anxiety-laden time when many promising PhDs see their academic dreams slip away due to circumstances beyond their control. We use a unique dataset of academic publishing and careers to chart the more or less successful postdoctoral paths. We build a measure of academic success on the citation patterns two to five years into a faculty career.

Cellular senescence, a major driver of aging, can be stimulated by DNA damage, and is counteracted by the DNA repair machinery. Here we show that in p16INK4a-deficient cells, senescence induction by the environmental genotoxin B[a]P or ionizing radiation (IR) completely depends on p21CIP1. Immunoprecipitation-based mass spectrometry interactomics data revealed that during senescence induction and maintenance, p21CIP1 specifically inhibits CDK4 and thereby activates the DREAM complex.

A tool to implement a length scale dependency to classical crystal plasticity simulations is presented. Classical crystal plasticity models do not include a size effect; therefore, the size of the grain does not influence the simulated deformation. Classical crystal plasticity advancements have been through the inclusion of stress or strain gradient based constitutive models to improve the simulation of length scale dependent deformation.

Superhydrophobicity, the enhanced hydrophobicity of surfaces decorated with textures of suitable size, is associated with a layer of gas trapped within surface roughness. The reduced liquid/solid contact makes superhydrophobicity attractive for many technological applications. This gas layer, however, can break down with the liquid completely wetting the surface.

This article reexamines the interpretation of the significance of the Aliquis slip and related materials in terms of a family crisis in 1900 involving Freud, Anna Freud Bernays and their youngest sister Paula. It contends that Ernest Jones and Anna Freud later hid this story from history, largely for family reasons. It supports this contention by drawing on Ernest Jones and Anna Freud's archived letters, Anna Freud Bernays' memoirs, the complete Freud-Fliess letters and other historical sources and compares them to The Origins of Psychoanalysis and to Ernest Jones' biography of Freud.
