Article Synopsis
  • Neurolathyrism is a serious upper motor neuron disorder caused by consuming too much grass pea, leading to significant physical and mental health issues.
  • A study in Dawunt wereda examined 631 households, finding a household prevalence of 9.2%, with factors like age, male sex, marital status, and specific grass pea consumption habits being influential.
  • The results indicate that modifying grass pea consumption, such as reducing the ratio of grass pea to other cereals and avoiding immature seeds, could help lower the risk of developing neurolathyrism.

Article Synopsis
  • Spinal cord disorders in tropical regions can be caused by a variety of factors, including trauma, tumors, and infections that are more prevalent in these areas, like Pott's disease and neuroborreliosis.
  • Tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) can arise from nutritional deficiencies, such as those of vitamin B and folate, and is often linked to malnutrition or the consumption of toxic cassava, leading to conditions like tropical myeloneuropathies.
  • The increased use of modern imaging technologies in the tropics has improved the diagnosis and treatment of these spinal disorders, which are significant contributors to mortality and disability, and this chapter focuses on TSP's common causes and management strategies.

After the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), an estimated 1,000 patients presented with lathyrism due to their excessive and prolonged consumption of grasspea ( L.) against the backdrop of poverty, drought, and famine. Based on 68 scientific communications between 1941 and 1962 by qualified medical professionals, the disease emerged in different geographical locations involving selective populations: (1) farmers from extensive areas of central Spain, traditionally producers and consumers of grasspea; (2) immigrants in the industrial belt of Catalonia and in the Basque Country, areas with little or no production of grasspea, which was imported from producing areas; (3) workers in Galicia, an area where the legume is neither produced nor consumed, who were seasonally displaced to high-production areas of grasspea in Castille; and (4) inmates of overcrowded postwar Spanish prisons.
