The Added Value of Coronary Calcium Score in Predicting Cardiovascular Events in Familial Hypercholesterolemia.

JACC Cardiovasc Imaging

December 2021

Aix Marseille University, INSERM, Institut National de Recherche pour l'agriculture, l'Alimentation et l'Environnement, C2VN, Marseille, France; Department of Nutrition, Metabolic Diseases, Endocrinology, La Conception Hospital, Marseille, France.

Objectives: This study aimed at investigating the additional contribution of coronary artery calcium (CAC) score to SAFEHEART (Spanish Familial Hypercholesterolemia Cohort Study) risk equation (SAFEHEART-RE) for cardiovascular risk prediction in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH).

Background: Common cardiovascular risk equations are imprecise for HeFH. Because of the high phenotype variability of HeFH, CAC score could help to better stratify the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).

mPGES-1 (Microsomal Prostaglandin E Synthase-1) Mediates Vascular Dysfunction in Hypertension Through Oxidative Stress.

Hypertension

August 2018

From the Departmento de Farmacología, Instituto de Investigación Hospital La Paz, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain (M.S.A., A.B.G.-R., M.G.-A., A.A., S.M.-R., M.S., A.M.B.)

mPGES-1 (microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1), the downstream enzyme responsible for PGE (prostaglandin E) synthesis in inflammatory conditions and oxidative stress are increased in vessels from hypertensive animals. We evaluated the role of mPGES-1-derived PGE in the vascular dysfunction and remodeling in hypertension and the possible contribution of oxidative stress. We used human peripheral blood mononuclear cells from asymptomatic patients, arteries from untreated and Ang II (angiotensin II)-infused mPGES-1 and mPGES-1 mice, and vascular smooth muscle cells exposed to PGE In human cells, we found a positive correlation between mPGES-1 mRNA and carotid intima-media thickness (=0.

Decreased level of cord blood circulating endothelial colony-forming cells in preeclampsia.

Hypertension

July 2014

From the CSIC/Universidad de Sevilla, Unidad Clínico-Experimental de Riesgo Vascular (UCAMI-UCERV) (R.M.-H., M.L.M., P.S., M.J.D.-S., J.V., R.M.-L.) and Unidad de Asesoría Estadística, Metodología y Evaluación de Investigación, Fundación Pública Andaluza para la Gestión de la Investigación en Salud de Sevilla (FISEVI) (J.M.P.-F.), Instituto de Biomedicina de Sevilla (IBiS) and Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío, Seville, Spain; Department of Cardiac Surgery, Boston Children's Hospital, MA (R.M.-H., R.-Z.L., R.M.-L., J.M.M.-M.); Department of Surgery, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA (R.-Z.L., R.M.-L., J.M.M.-M.); and Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Cambridge, MA (J.M.M.-M.).

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related disorder associated with increased cardiovascular risk for the offspring. Endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) are a subset of circulating endothelial progenitor cells that participate in the formation of vasculature during development. However, the effect of preeclampsia on fetal levels of ECFCs is largely unknown.

Hormonal status was examined in 30 intact male Wistar rats (body mass 200-220 g) and 10 healthy male volunteers aged 25-35 years. Hormonal status and influence of exercise were assessed in human males after 2, 10 and 19 days of stay in the sanatorium situated 2000 m above the sea level. The animals were decapitated on day 24 of their stay in the mountains.

Over the past five years, a series of important contributions have appeared in the medical literature on the role of infective agents in the pathogenesis of gastric and duodenal inflammation. The analysis of the available data confirms the possible role of campylobacter pylori in causing acute inflammation of the type B antral gastritis, although its role in the pathogenesis of gastric and duodenal ulcer and of the socalled non ulcer dyspepsia is still doubtful. Not even the results of therapeutic contributions obtained with colloidal bismuth subcitrate and antibiotics allow a definitive orientation.
