Background: Current guidelines recommend transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for patients with aortic stenosis and porcelain aorta (PA). Neurological outcomes of patients with PA undergoing TAVI with modern valves require clarification as most trials examined balloon-expandable valves (BEV) and self-expandable valves in intermediate or high-risk patients, but not specifically in patients with PA. Our aim was to compare outcomes, including stroke and mortality, in well-matched patients with and without PA who received BEV during transfemoral TAVI procedures.

Chronic wounds are complex conditions categorized into pressure injuries, diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and arterial ulcers. In managing these wounds, the selection of appropriate wound care products is of critical importance. Commonly used dressings include hydrocolloid, hydrogel, alginate, foam, and silver-containing dressings.

Case: We present a 42-year-old man who developed extensive left lower extremity arterial thrombosis following COVID-19 pneumonia. Despite multiple revascularization attempts and a below-knee amputation, he faced wound necrosis and insufficient soft tissue coverage. An innovative approach using a pedicled flap and sequential flow-through free flaps was used for limb salvage.

Berlin Heart EXCOR sVAD implantation technique for neonates and infants with functionally univentricular ductal-dependent systemic circulation.

Multimed Man Cardiothorac Surg

January 2025

Congenital Heart Center, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA.

The Berlin Heart EXCOR is a pulsatile paracorporeal ventricular assist device (VAD) for neonates, infants, children and adults with congenital or acquired severe ventricular dysfunction. Berlin Heart EXCOR VADs are routinely used as either a bridge to a cardiac transplantation, or occasionally as a bridge to ventricular recovery. Our programmatic philosophy is to bridge neonates and infants with functionally univentricular ductal-dependent systemic circulation or functionally univentricular ductal-dependent pulmonary circulation who are at high risk for staged palliation because of important cardiac risk factors with a single-ventricle VAD (sVAD) as a bridge to a cardiac transplant.
