Astrocytes are the major glial cells in brain tissue and are involved, among many functions, ionic and metabolic homeostasis maintenance of synapses. These cells express receptors and transporters for neurotransmitters, including GABA. GABA signaling is reportedly able to affect astroglial response to injury, as evaluated by specific astrocyte markers such as glial fibrillary acid protein and the calcium-binding protein, S100B.

Advanced oxidation processes are useful methodologies to accomplish abatement of contaminants; however, elucidation of the reaction mechanisms is hampered by the difficult detection of the short-lived primary key species involved in the photocatalytic processes. Nevertheless, herein the combined use of an organic photocatalyst such as triphenylpyrylium (TPP) and photophysical techniques based on emission and absorption spectroscopy allowed monitoring the photocatalyst-derived short-lived intermediates. This methodology has been applied to the photocatalyzed degradation of different pollutants, such as acetaminophen, acetamiprid, caffeine and carbamazepine.

Background: 5,5-Diphenylhydantoin (Phenytoin) is a well-known anticonvulsant and antiarrhythmic drug which may cause unwanted side effects. In order to avoid the adverse effects of phenytoin, especially on the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, two small series of amine derivatives (Mannich bases) and amide ones were designed containing β-tetralinohydantoin system. In preliminary studies, some of arylpiperazinylmethyl derivatives with a β-tetralinohydantoin moiety were effective in screening anticonvulsant tests in mice.
