Introduction: Microbial contamination in food products such as pastries, poses a significant public health concern due to the potential risks of foodborne infection and outbreak, Therefore, to prevent these infections, it is essential to investigate the frequency and extent of microbial contamination as well as the level of drug resistance in pastries. Due to this issue, our study aimed to assess the microbial diversity and the drug susceptibility patterns of microbial pollutants in pastry shops in Markazi province, Iran.

Methods: The study involved collecting 120 pastry samples from 30 pastry shops in Markazi province, Iran.

Background: Nocardiosis is an opportunistic infection that has a low prevalence rate, its clinical manifestations are atypical and can be easily misdiagnosed as other diseases. The correct diagnosis and treatment are frequently delayed by various factors. In this case report, we present a pediatric patient with Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders who developed Nocardia farcinica pneumonia complicated by pneumocystis jiroveci infection.

Analysis of the Prevalence of Bacterial Pathogens and Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns of in Largemouth Bass () from Guangdong, China.

Pathogens

November 2024

Guangzhou Key Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Diseases and Waterfowl Breeding, Innovative Institute of Animal Healthy Breeding, College of Animal Sciences and Technology, Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering, Guangzhou 510222, China.

To gain insights into the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of major bacterial pathogens affecting largemouth bass () in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, Guangdong, China, a study was conducted from August 2021 to July 2022. During this period, bacteria were isolated and identified from the internal organs of diseased largemouth bass within the PRD region. The antimicrobial resistance patterns of 11 antibiotics approved for use in aquaculture in China were analyzed in 80 strains of using the microbroth dilution method.

Multicenter systematic review of clinical characteristics, diagnostic optimization, and personalized treatment for brain Nocardia infections.

Microb Pathog

January 2025

National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Tracking and Forecasting for Infectious Diseases, National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - This systematic review analyzes 512 cases of Nocardia brain infections from 2000 to mid-2024, focusing on clinical symptoms, imaging results, and antibiotic resistance patterns in both immunocompromised and non-immunocompromised patients.
  • - It highlights the shortcomings of traditional microbiological cultures in diagnosing these infections compared to advanced molecular methods, which improve detection speed and accuracy.
  • - Key factors for better treatment outcomes include timely antibiotic administration (notably sulfonamides and β-lactams) and the potential need for surgical intervention, emphasizing the importance of improved diagnostic and treatment strategies.

Construction of core genome multi-locus sequence typing schemes for population structure analyses of Nocardia species.

Res Microbiol

November 2024

Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Israel; Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Nocardia is a genus consisting of various pathogenic species that can cause infections in humans, but there's limited understanding of their population structure and genomic methods.
  • The study analyzed whole genome sequences from 193 isolates of five main Nocardia species using the chewBBACA pipeline to develop a species-specific core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) schema.
  • The results revealed that N. brasiliensis is evolutionarily distinct, all species displayed polyclonal population structures with limited phylogenetic clustering, clonal complexes were often geographically confined, and there was no evidence of common-source transmission among the strains studied.
