Although radiation is a strategy widely used to inhibit cancer progression, which includes those of the neck and head, there are still few experimental reports on radiation effects in the cerebellum, particularly on the morphology of its cortex layers and on the Matrix metalloproteinases' (MMPs') expression, which, recently, seems to be involved in the progression of some mental disorders. Therefore, in the present study, we evaluated the morphology of the cerebellum close to the expression of MMP-9 from 4 up to 60 days after a 15-Gy X-ray single dose of X-ray irradiation had been applied to the heads of healthy adult male rats. The cerebellum of the control and irradiated groups was submitted for an analysis of cell Purkinje count, nuclear perimeter, and chromatin density using morphometric estimatives obtained from the Feulgen histochemistry reaction.

Background: Genomic instability is a hallmark of cancer cells contributing to tumor development and progression. Integrin-linked kinase (ILK) is a focal adhesion protein with well-established role in carcinogenesis. We have previously shown that ILK overexpression is critically implicated in human colorectal cancer (CRC) progression.

This study sought to determine the effect and explore the mechanism of the Chinese medicinal compound preparation Diwu Yanggan (DWYG) capsule on the occurrence and development of liver cancer using the Solt-Farber rat model. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly distributed into a normal group, sham group, DWYG group, sorafenib group, and model group. The DWYG group and sorafenib group were given DWYG capsule and sorafenib tablet, respectively, with induction of the model.

While interleukin-1β (IL-1β) is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine essential for host defense, high systemic levels cause life-threatening inflammatory syndromes. ATP, a stimulus of IL-1β maturation, is released from damaged cells along with β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (β-NAD). Here, we tested the hypothesis that β-NAD controls ATP-signaling and, hence, IL-1β release.

Purpose: To investigated the influence of radiation therapy (RT), surgery (OP), radio-chemotherapy (RChT), or chemotherapy (ChT) on small cell lung cancer metastases in 2 xenograft models.
Methods And Materials: A total of 1 × 10 human small cell lung cancer cells (OH1, H69) were subcutaneously injected into severe combined immunodeficiency mice to form a local primary tumor node at the lower trunk. Radiation therapy, OP, RChT, or ChT were started after development of palpable tumors.
