Are Streptomyces bacteria involved in the ciguatoxicity of the surgeon fish Ctenochaetus striatus?

Bull Soc Pathol Exot

Institut Territorial de Recherches Médicales Louis Malardé, Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia.

Published: December 1993

Several Streptomyces strains have been isolated from the digestive tract of the herbivorous fish C. striatus, a preeminent ciguateric fish of Polynesian waters. In order to study the possible role played by these bacteria in the toxicity of this fish, the quantitative and qualitative distributions of these isolates within toxic and non toxic fish are compared. The preliminary results are discussed.

The present study aimed to characterize the behavior and evaluate the electromyographic (EMG), electrocardiographic (ECG), and respiratory responses of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) when exposed to different concentrations of Camphor (CPR) as a potential anaesthetic in immersion and recovery baths. The goal was to determine the impact of CPR on muscle, cardiac, and respiratory functions, and assess its suitability as an anesthetic for tilapia. Therefore, juvenile fish (38.

PIF/harbinger transposon-derived protein promotes 7SL expression to enhance pathogen resistance.

Transcriptional regulation governs gene expression levels, primarily controlled by "cis-acting DNA elements" and "trans-acting protein factors". However, the conventional view that cis-regulation is solely attributable to DNA elements is challenged in this study. Our research indicates that transposon-derived proteins may retain their original DNA-binding preference and exert cis-regulatory effects on nearby genes on the chromosome, thus denoted as "cis-acting factors".

Various fishing activities are common economic practices in large hydroelectric reservoirs, such as Itaipu. Consequently, the Itaipu company has monitored artisanal commercial fishing since the formation of its reservoir. In this study, we used long-term monitoring data to evaluate the sustainability of this fishing activity in the Itaipu Reservoir, one of the largest reservoirs in the Neotropical region.

The encapsulation of curcumin in the emulsions has attracted much attention in functional food development. Herein, the fish oil-loaded silver carp scale gelatin-stabilized emulsions with vitamins were explored for the delivery of curcumin. The curcumin encapsulation had no obvious effect on the formation, storage stability, lipid oxidation, and in vitro droplet digestion behaviors of the emulsions.

Nanoplastic (NP) pollution poses serious health hazards to aquatic ecosystems, impacting various physiological systems of aquatic organisms. This review examines the complex interplay between NPs and different physiological systems. In the digestive system, NPs downregulate the hsp70-like gene in Mytilus galloprovincialis, leading to decreased metabolic processes and impaired digestion.
