It is shown that menadion increases the rate of Ca2+ efflux from mitochondria which decreases in the presence of ditiotreitol. Menadion at concentration of 50 microM induces Ca2+ efflux from mitochondria and its effect on synaptic transmission is discussed.

, an opportunistic foodborne pathogen, has a strong resistance to osmotic stress and desiccation stress, but the current studies cannot elucidate this resistance mechanism absolutely. A mechanosensitive channel MscM was suspected of involving to desiccation resistance mechanism of To investigate the specific molecular mechanism, the mutant strain (Δ) was constructed using the homologous recombination method, and the complementary strain was obtained by gene complementation, followed by the analysis of the difference between the wild-type (WT), mutant, and complementary strains. Compared to the wild-type bacteria (WT), the inactivation rate of the Δ strain decreased by 15.

Intracellular metal ion-based chemistry for programmed cell death.

Pharmaceutical Sciences Division, School of Pharmacy, University of Wisconsin Madison, Madison, WI 53705, USA.

Intracellular metal ions play essential roles in multiple physiological processes, including catalytic action, diverse cellular processes, intracellular signaling, and electron transfer. It is crucial to maintain intracellular metal ion homeostasis which is achieved by the subtle balance of storage and release of metal ions intracellularly along with the influx and efflux of metal ions at the interface of the cell membrane. Dysregulation of intracellular metal ions has been identified as a key mechanism in triggering programmed cell death (PCD).

All-Russian Collection of Microorganisms (VKM), G.K. Skryabin Institute of Biochemistry and Physiology of Microorganisms, Pushchino Scientific Center for Biological Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, pr. Nauki 5, 142290 Pushchino, Moscow Region, Russia.

In recent decades, most studies of microbial rhodopsins have focused on their identification and characterization in aquatic bacteria. In 2021, actinomycetes of the family Geodermatophilaceae, commonly inhabiting terrestrial ecosystems in hot and arid regions, have been reported to contain rhodopsins with DTEW, DTEF and NDQ amino acid motifs. An advanced bioinformatics analysis performed in this work additionally revealed NTQ rhodopsin and heliorhodopsins.

Starvation can induce autophagy and apoptosis in intestinal cells. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, we investigated autophagy and apoptosis in the midgut of the model insect, silkworm (Bombyx mori), focusing on calcium homeostasis. The results indicated that the body weight of silkworms decreased, along with damage to the morphology of their digestive tracts and midguts after starvation treatment.

Cardiac ischemia followed by reperfusion results in cardiac cell death, which has been attributed to an increase of mitochondrial Ca2+ concentration, resulting in activation of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (PTP). Evaluating this hypothesis requires understanding of the mechanisms responsible for control of mitochondrial Ca2+ in physiological conditions and how they are altered during both ischemia and reperfusion. Ca2+ influx is thought to occur through the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter (MCU).
