Background: The use of in-vivo dosimetry is a long-standing but also labor-intensive component of risk-level assessment for patients with implanted devices. A calculation-only approach, using treatment planning system (TPS)-calculated doses along with imaging doses estimates when relevant, has the potential to streamline the physics workflow without negatively impacting patient safety.

Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility of using a calculation-only approach for risk level assessment for patients with implanted electronic medical devices.

An automated standing type Quick Scan Whole Body Monitor (QS-WBM) has been developed for the measurement of internal radioactive contamination due to high energy photon (HEP) emitters (E >200 keV). Individuals are monitored while standing on a platform inside QS-WBM at specified reference position. Instances may occur where individuals deviate from their monitoring position, potentially leading to errors in the measurement of the body content.

Biomolecular analysis of the Epigravettian human remains from Riparo Tagliente in northern Italy.

Commun Biol

October 2024

Archaeo- and Palaeogenetics, Institute for Archaeological Sciences, Department of Geosciences, University of Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany.

The Epigravettian human remains from Riparo Tagliente in northern Italy represent some of the earliest evidence of human occupation in the southern Alpine slopes after the Last Glacial Maximum. Genomic analyses of the 17,000-year-old Tagliente 2 mandible revealed the oldest presence of a genetic profile with affinities to the Near East in the Italian peninsula, which later became the most widespread hunter-gatherer ancestry across Europe. However, a comparable biomolecular characterization of the Tagliente 1 burial remains unavailable, preventing us from defining its biological relationships with Tagliente 2.

Dual-energy computed tomography: pediatric considerations.

Pediatr Radiol

December 2024

Department of Radiology, Massachusetts General Hospital, 55 Fruit St., Austen 250, Boston, MA, 02114, USA.

Multidetector computed tomography (CT) has revolutionized medicine and is now a fundamental aspect of modern radiology. Hardware and software advancements have significantly improved CT accessibility, image quality, and acquisition times. While considerable attention has been directed towards the potential risks of ionizing radiation from CT scans in children, recent concerns regarding the possible short- and long-term risks related to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) conducted under general anesthesia have generated fresh interest in novel pediatric CT applications and techniques that allow imaging of awake patients at low radiation doses.
