Background: Exposure to hairs of caterpillars and moths are collectively termed as lepidopterism. Clinical manifestations include cutaneous presentation of localized stinging reaction with wheals or vesiculation, acute urticarial papules and plaques, ophthalmic, oropharyngeal involvement to severe life-threatening anaphylactic reactions with angioedema.
Aims: In this study we have determined the prevalence of various cutaneous, oropharyngeal and ophthalmic manifestations of lepidopterism at a tertiary health care center.

Upon immune challenge, recognition signals trigger insect immunity to remove the pathogens through cellular and humoral responses. Various immune mediators propagate the immune signals to nearby tissues, in which polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) derivatives play crucial roles. However, little was known on how the insects terminate the activated immune responses after pathogen neutralization.

The silkworm (Bombyx mori) has long been valued food and feed in East Asia for its abundant nutritional and medicinal attributes, conversely, it can elicit allergic responses in susceptible individuals. Therefore, the development of silkworm detection method is required to avert allergenic incidents. In this study, two methodologies, tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and real-time PCR, were developed to achieve effective silkworm detection.
