Introduction: The contribution of obesity phenotypes to dyslipidaemia in middle-aged adults from four sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries at different stages of the epidemiological transition has not been reported. We characterized lipid levels and investigated their relation with the growing burden of obesity in SSA countries.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.

Chemical Reaction Networks from Scratch with Reaction Prediction and Kinetics-Guided Exploration.

J Chem Theory Comput

January 2025

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana 46556, United States.

Algorithmic reaction explorations based on transition state searches can now routinely predict relatively short reaction sequences involving small molecules. However, applying these algorithms to deeper chemical reaction network (CRN) exploration still requires the development of more efficient and accurate exploration policies. Here, an exploration algorithm, which we name yet another kinetic strategy (YAKS), is demonstrated that uses microkinetic simulations of the nascent network to achieve cost-effective, deep network exploration.

Bismuth oxyselenide (BiOSe) stands as a highly promising layered semiconductor with outstanding optical, electrical, and thermal properties. For the practical application of the material toward the devices, growing BiOSe directly on the amorphous substrate at low temperatures (<400 °C) is essential; however, the negatively charged bottom Se layer originating from alternating stacks of Se and [BiO] has hindered this process. In this work, we report the method for synthesizing a BiOSe film on amorphous alumina (AlO) directly at 350 °C by using chemical solution deposition.

In-Cell Mass Spectrometry and Ultraviolet Photodissociation Navigates the Intracellular Protein Heterogeneity.

Directly probing the heterogeneous conformations of intracellular proteins within their native cellular environment remains a significant challenge in mass spectrometry (MS). Here, we establish an in-cell MS and ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) strategy that directly ejects proteins from living cells into a mass spectrometer, followed by 193 nm UVPD for structural analysis. Applying this approach to calmodulin (CaM), we reveal that it adopts more extended conformations within living cells compared with purified samples , highlighting the unique influence of intracellular environments on protein folding.

Rapid Electrochemical Uranium Extraction from Real Seawater via the Intermediate of Vacancy-Trapped Isolated Uranyl.

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Environment-friendly Energy Materials, School of National Defence Science & Technology, Nuclear Waste and Environmental Safety Key Laboratory of Defense, Southwest University of Science and Technology, Mianyang, Sichuan 621010, P. R. China.

Electrochemical uranium extraction from seawater is a vital project for the sustainable development of the nuclear industry, which requires selective intrinsic binding sites for uranyl. In this work, oxygen vacancies (O vacancies) were developed as an atomically identified confinement for uranyl, and thus, rapid uranium extraction from seawater was achieved. In a short period of 700 s, InO nanosheets with rich O vacancies (V-rich InO nanosheets) exhibited a high extraction efficiency of 88.
