The causal relationship between Packed red blood cell (RBC) transfusion and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains uncertain. This study aims to provide an exploration of transfusion and NEC in very preterm infants. Using data from the Chinese Neonatal Network cohort study between 2019 and 2021, the analysis focused on very preterm infants (with a birth weight of < 1500 g or a gestational age of < 32 weeks) who developed NEC after receiving transfusions.

Purpose Of Review: Ectodomain shedding has been investigated since the late 1980s. The abundant and platelet specific GPIbα receptor is cleaved by ADAM17 resulting in the release of its ectodomain called glycocalicin. This review will address the role of glycocalicin as an end-stage marker of platelet turnover and storage lesion and will consider a potential function as effector in processes beyond hemostasis.

Objectives: Xenotransfusion is the transfusion of blood from one species to another. With varying availability of allogenic feline blood (AFB) and in emergency conditions, circumstances occur when canine blood is transfused to cats. This study aimed to characterise the indications, effectiveness, limitations, and acute and late transfusion-related adverse effects of canine blood xenotransfusion compared with matched AFB to anaemic cats, and their survival and longer-term outcome.

Objectives: Current evidence favors plasma to be effective against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in critically ill patients in the early stages of infection. We investigated the safety and efficacy of convalescent plasma in specifically late-stage (designated as after 2 weeks of hospital admission) severe COVID-19 infection. We also conducted a literature review on the late-stage use of plasma in COVID-19.

Objective: A few patients in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) receive numerous platelet transfusions. These patients can become refractory, defined as transfusions of ≥10 mL/kg failing to increase the platelet count by at least 5,000/µL. Causes of, and best treatments for, platelet transfusion refractoriness in neonates have not been defined.
