Gut Microbes
December 2025
Health, Nutrition & Care (HNC), Dsm-Firmenich, Kaiseraugst, Switzerland.
In health, the gut microbiome functions as a stable ecosystem maintaining overall balance and ensuring its own survival against environmental stressors through complex microbial interaction. This balance and protection from stressors is maintained through interactions both within the bacterial ecosystem as well as with its host. As a consequence, the gut microbiome plays a critical role in various physiological processes including maintaining the structure and function of the gut barrier, educating the gut immune system, and modulating the gut motor, digestive/absorptive, as well as neuroendocrine system all of which are crucial for human health and disease pathogenesis.

Background: High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) has been used as a non-invasive brain stimulation technique in drug-addicted populations. The current study found that HD-tDCS may reduce drug craving in methamphetamine (MA) addicts by stimulating the left and right sides of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in the brain.
Methods: In this study, 60 patients with MA use disorder were recruited and randomly assigned to three groups: the left DLPFC group, the right DLPFC group, and the sham stimulation group, the groups received a 20-min HD-tDCS intervention for 8 consecutive days.

Alternative pre-mRNA splicing (AS) is a crucial regulatory layer of gene expression in eukaryotes. AS patterns can change in response to abiotic and biotic stress, allowing cellular functions to adapt to environmental conditions. Here, we examined the effects of cellular stress-inducing chemicals on AS-mediated gene regulation in Arabidopsis thaliana by investigating the alternatively spliced forms of SERINE-ARGININE PROTEIN30 (SRp30) and U1-70 K, encoding splicing factors, as well as ASCORBATE PEROXIDASE3 (APX3) and FOLYLPOLYGLUTAMATE SYNTHASE3 (FPGS3), encoding enzymes important for stress responses.

The widely distributed heat shock protein DnaJ is renowned for its pivotal role in enhancing thermal tolerance in plants; however, its involvement in drought tolerance remains elusive. In this study, genes encoding DnaJ1 were cloned from drought-resistant wild tomato (Solanum pennellii) and drought-sensitive cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). SpDnaJ1 and SlDnaJ1 from both tomato species were localized in the chloroplast, and their gene expression was induced by various abiotic stresses.

Melatonin significantly influences the regulation of plant growth, development, and stress tolerance. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying melatonin accumulation for drought tolerance in citrus are not fully understood. In this study, we first demonstrated that application of exogenous melatonin resulted in better drought tolerance by reducing water loss and maintaining redox homeostasis.
