Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) are prevalent human biogases detectable in individuals with periodontal disease; therefore, measuring VSC gases in human breath can yield significant, noninvasive diagnostic information indicative of such diseases. In this study, we developed a gas sensor with selective and enhanced sensing capabilities for VSCs methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide. This sensor comprises a cellulose paper substrate impregnated with 2,2'-dithiobis(5-nitropyridine) and sodium acetate.

The management of people with epilepsy in a city wide care home service, the impact of a GP with Special Interest in epilepsy, and Enhanced Health in Care Homes Framework.

Epilepsy Behav

January 2025

Consultant Neurologist, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Homerton Row, London E9 6SR, and UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London WC1N 3BG, UK.

Background: The incidence of epilepsy increases with age, especially in people diagnosed with dementia. Seizures in an elderly population are likely to have a focal onset, for which sodium channel blockers are the drug of choice. This study reviews the clinical needs and care of people with epilepsy (PWE) in a city wide care home service and assessing the impact of a GP with Special Interest in epilepsy (GPwSIe).

Zero-Waste Polyanion and Prussian Blue Composites toward Practical Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Institute for Carbon Neutralization Technology, College of Chemistry and Materials Engineering, Wenzhou University, Wenzhou, Zhejiang, 325035, China.

Closed-loop transformation of raw materials into high-value-added products is highly desired for the sustainable development of the society but is seldom achieved. Here, a low-cost, solvent-free and "zero-waste" mechanochemical protocol is reported for the large-scale preparation of cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). This process ensures full utilization of raw materials, effectively reduces water consumption, and simplifies the operating process.

Department of Chemistry, State University of New York at Binghamton, Binghamton, NY, 13902, USA; Materials Engineering and Science Program, State University of New York at Binghamton, Binghamton, NY, 13902, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to control pests and enhance crop yields. However, post-harvest, there are growing concerns about the potential health risks posed by pesticide residues on produce surfaces. Analyzing these residues is challenging due to their typically low concentrations and the potential interference from the complex matrix of the produce's surface.

Bioremediation Potential of PM1 in Sodium Selenite-Contaminated Soil and Its Impact on Microbial Community Assembly.

Microorganisms

November 2024

Hubei Key Laboratory of Biological Resources Protection and Utilization, Hubei Minzu University, Enshi 445000, China.

Soil microbial communities are particularly sensitive to selenium contamination, which has seriously affected the stability of soil ecological environment and function. In this study, we applied high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing to examine the effects of low and high doses of sodium selenite and the selenite-degrading bacterium, PM1, on soil bacterial community composition, diversity, and assembly processes under controlled laboratory conditions. Our results indicated that sodium selenite and strain PM1 were key predictors of bacterial community structure in selenium-contaminated soils.
