A mediastinal mass was incidentally detected in a 42-year-old Japanese woman during a routine medical checkup. Computed tomography revealed a 7-cm, well-circumscribed multilocular cystic mass consistent with a mature cystic teratoma; however, no solid or cystic lesion had been detected at a voluntary complete medical checkup 1.5 years earlier.

Mixed germ cell tumor composed of a tridermic testicular teratoma and seminoma in a rooster.

J Vet Diagn Invest

May 2019

Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA (Tavella, LeRoith).

A 5-y-old backyard Araucana-Americana rooster was presented to the regional diagnostic laboratory with a history of progressive lethargy and respiratory signs. Autopsy revealed a single large mass of testicular origin in the coelomic cavity, causing compression of other organs. Histologically, the mass was 1 neoplasm with mixed components of 2 different germ cell tumors, namely a teratoma composed of elements of all 3 primordial germ cell lines (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm), and a seminoma consisting of round or polygonal cells arranged in sheets supported by a scant fibrovascular stroma.

Intracoelomic teratoma in a domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus): a case report including immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.

Res Vet Sci

October 2012

Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Teramo University, Piazza Aldo Moro 45, 64100 Teramo, Italy.

A female domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) suddenly died with abdominal distension and a large multilobulated mass within the coelomic cavity was found. Histologically and immunohistochemically, a benign mature tridermic teratoma was diagnosed and epithelial structures, cartilage, bone, myxoid tissue, adipocytes, muscle cells, cystic spaces lined by squamous epithelium, feather follicles, melanocytes and variable neural and glial differentiation were recognized. By electron microscopy, desmosomes, keratin bundles, dense core neurosecretory granules, aberrant Z-line material and Luse bodies were found.

Thoracic teratoma in a white Pekin duck (Anas platyrhinchos domesticus).

Avian Dis

January 2003

Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie, Legnaro (PD), Italy.

Teratomas are infrequent tumors in domestic fowl and have been rarely reported in ducks. It appears that the only case of mediastinal teratoma in a Pekin duck was observed by Alezais and Cotte in 1908. A lobulated, firm mass occupied the thorax of a 7-mo-old male white Pekin duck (Anas platyrhinchos domesticus).
