Regulation of the insulin-Akt signaling pathway and glycolysis during dehydration stress in the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis.

Biochem Cell Biol

December 2017

Institute of Biochemistry and Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, K1S 5B6, Canada.

Estivation is an adaptive stress response utilized by some amphibians during periods of drought in the summer season. In this study, we examine the regulation of the insulin signaling cascade and glycolysis pathway in the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis during the dehydration stress induced state of estivation. We show that in the brain and heart of X.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of desiccation on secretion of inflammatory cytokines in corneal epithelial cells and in the rat desiccation model.

Methods: A human corneal epithelial cell line (CEPI) was grown in keratinocyte growth medium 2 (KGM2) to approximately 80% confluence. The medium was aspirated and dishes were left for 0 to 30 min with the cover left open to dry the cells (short-term desiccation).

Objective: Tracheal gas insufflation (TGI) either continuously, or at inspiration, or at expiration, is a technique associated with mechanical ventilation aimed to enhance CO2 elimination in favouring washout of anatomical dead space. This article analyses the mechanism of action, the techniques and the effects of TGI in presence of hypercapnia, especially in the fame of ARDS in adults.

Data Sources: In addition to some historical or major references, the articles on TGI published over the past five years have been searched in the Medline data base.

This study is the first to assess the analytic potential of Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy in determining exercise-induced metabolic changes, such as glucose and lactate serum concentrations, with single 50 microL blood microsamples. One-hundred ninety-eight capillary blood samples were taken at rest (rest serum) and after rowing exercises at different intensities (exercise serum) to obtain a wide range of lactate concentrations. A quantitative method is described with FT-IR spectroscopy involving only dilution and dessiccation of serum samples.

We have measured total body water (TBW, by dessiccation), extracellular fluid volume (ECF, Na2(35)SO4 space), and plasma volume (PV, radioiodinated serum albumin space) in 5-sec-butyl-5-ethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid and sodium salt (Inactin)-anesthetized spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats aged 12-60 days. Interstitial fluid volume (ISF) was calculated as ECF minus PV. Changes in TBW, ECF, and ISF were largely a function of age in both strains, which is typical of developing mammals.
