Combining cholesterol-loaded methyl-β-cyclodextrin (CD-CHL) with vitamin E-loaded methyl-β-cyclodextrin (CD-Vit E) to combat cold shock and oxidative stress during sperm cryopreservation in soybean lecithin extenders remains unexplored. Thus, the current study aimed to investigate the effect of treating bull sperm with CD-CHL and CD-Vit E prior to cryopreservation in a soybean lecithin extender. Sperm collected from eight fertile bulls were pooled and split into six aliquots.

An L-type lectin receptor-like kinase promotes starch accumulation during rice pollen maturation.

Starch accumulation is key for the maturity of rice pollen grains; however, the regulatory mechanism underlying this process remains unknown. Here, we have isolated a male-sterile rice mutant, (), which produces nonviable pollen grains with defective starch accumulation. Functional analysis revealed that encodes an active L-type lectin receptor-like kinase (L-LecRLK).

Synthesis of a Hexavalent Betulinic Acid Derivative as a Hemagglutinin-Targeted Influenza Virus Entry Inhibitor.

Naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenes, such as betulinic acid (BA) and its derivatives, exhibit various pharmaceutical activities and have been the subject of great interest, in particular for their antiviral properties. Here, we found a new anti-influenza virus conjugate, hexakis 6-deoxy-6-[4--(3β-hydroxy-lup-20(29)-en-28-oate)aminomethyl-1-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl]-2,3-di--acetyl-α-cyclodextrin (CYY1-11, ), in a mini library of pentacyclic triterpene-cyclodextrin conjugates by performing a cell-based screening assay and then exploring the underlying mechanisms. Our results showed that conjugate possessed a high-level activity against the influenza virus A/WSN/33 with an IC value of 5.

When consumed as whole grain, wheat has a high nutrient density that contributes to a healthy diet. Yet, products labeled as whole wheat can still contain a substantial amount of refined grain leading to the confusion for consumers, so a method was designed to determine the whole grain status within wheat-based foods. Wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), a lectin found in the germ tissue of wheat kernels, was evaluated as a biomarker of whole grain wheat.

Controllable Display of Sequential Enzymes on Yeast Surface with Enhanced Biocatalytic Activity toward Efficient Enzymatic Biofuel Cells.

A precisely localized enzyme cascade was constructed by integrating two sequential enzymes, glucoamylase (GA) and glucose oxidase (GOx), on a yeast cell surface through an a-agglutinin receptor as the anchoring motif with cohesin-dockerin interaction. The overall catalytic activities of the combinant strains were significantly dependent on the assembly method, enzyme molecular size, enzyme order, and enzyme stoichiometry. The combinant strain with GA-DocC initially bound scaffoldin prior to GOx-DocT exhibited a higher overall reaction rate.
