Anagen effluvium is a rare adverse effect of methotrexate therapy, generally associated with high-dose regimens. We report a 12-year-old girl who developed abrupt hair loss 1 week after inadvertently taking methotrexate 15 mg daily for five consecutive days (total 75 mg), without other signs of systemic toxicity. Trichoscopic examination and trichogram findings confirmed methotrexate-induced anagen effluvium, and spontaneous hair regrowth occurred after 2 months.

Anti-Hair Loss Effect of Veratric Acid on Dermal Papilla Cells.

Int J Mol Sci

March 2025

Biospectrum Life Science Institute, Sinsu-ro, Suji-gu, Yongin-City 16827, Gyeonggi-Do, Republic of Korea.

The activation of hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs), a critical target of hair loss relief, can be achieved through the upregulation of proliferation, the stimulation of hair inducibility, and the inhibition of cellular senescence. Veratric acid (VA) is a major benzoic acid found in fruits and vegetables. The biological activity of VA on HFDPCs remains to be elucidated.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and alopecia areata (AA) frequently coexist due to shared immune-mediated mechanisms. Treatments targeting AD, including Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors and dupilumab, may impact AA outcomes in unpredictable ways. This study aims to evaluate the effects of advanced therapies on patients with concurrent AD and AA to inform treatment strategies.
