Introduction: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) exhibit complement factor expression changes that may be obesity-driven rather than an intrinsic facet of PCOS; furthermore, complement changes have been associated with vitamin D deficiency, a common feature of PCOS. Therefore, complement pathway proteins and vitamin D levels may be linked in PCOS.

Methods: We measured plasma levels of complement pathway proteins by Slow Off-rate Modified Aptamer (SOMA)-scan plasma protein measurement for the classical (C4, C4a, and C4b) and alternative pathways (C3, C3b, iC3b, properdin, and factors B, D, and H) in weight and age-matched non-obese non-insulin resistant women with PCOS (n = 24) and control women (n = 24).

Introduction: Complement factors mediate the recruitment and activation of immune cells and are associated with metabolic changes during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to determine whether complement factors in the maternal serum and follicular fluid (FF) are associated with fertilization (IVF) outcomes in overweight/obese women.

Methods: Forty overweight/obese (BMI = 30.

Proteomic analysis of differentially expressed proteins in the serum of patients with acute renal allograft rejection using iTRAQ labelling technology.

Transplantation is currently the best treatment for patients with end‑stage renal disease. However, acute rejection (AR) is the major source of failure in renal transplantation. The current best practice for the diagnosis of AR involves renal biopsy, but it is invasive, time‑consuming, costly and inconvenient.

New genetic variation in European hares, Lepus granatensis and L. europaeus.

Biochem Genet

April 2000

Centro de Estudos de Ciência Animal (CECA/UP), Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade do Porto, Portugal.

Six genetic polymorphisms for the Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) and four for the brown hare (L. europaeus) are newly described. The genetic variation of peptidases B (PEPB) and C (PEPC), hemoglobin alpha chain (HBA), hemopexin (HPX), vitamin D binding protein (GC), and properdin factor B (BF) was assessed by conventional electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing in carrier ampholytes and hybrid pH gradients.

The genetic polymorphism of vitamin D binding protein (DBP) and of properdin Factor B (BF) was determined in unrelated Namibian San and Khoi, and in South African Blacks, Caucasoids and Cape Coloureds. Alleles have been confirmed by segregation patterns in family studies. The DBP phenotypes were identified by isoelectric focusing on ultrathin polyacrylamide gels and the BF phenotypes were identified by electrophoresis on 1% agarose gels; both methods were followed by immunofixation.
