Three cases of hemoglobin M disease in a family lineage: Case report and literature review.

Medicine (Baltimore)

January 2025

Department of Pediatric Hematology, Children's Medical Center, The First Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, China.

Rationale: This study presents a case of hemoglobin M disease (HMD), a rare inherited disorder characterized by persistent cyanosis and hypoxemia, observed across 3 generations within a single family. The diagnosis of HMD poses significant challenges, particularly in asymptomatic individuals, due to its rarity and the subtlety of its symptoms. Notably, there is a scarcity of reports on methemoglobinemia in pediatric populations, which further complicates early detection and intervention.

Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is a blood borne pathogen that affects around 200 million individuals worldwide. Immunizations against the Hepatitis C Virus are intended to enhance T-cell responses and have been identified as a crucial component of successful antiviral therapy. Nevertheless, attempts to mediate clinically relevant anti-HCV activity in people have mainly failed, despite the vaccines present satisfactory progress.

The aromaticity of a representative sample of pro-aromatic radicals and its nitro, amino, hydroxyl and imine substituted derivatives has been analysed by means of multicentre delocalization indices (MCI) and nuclear-independent chemical shifts (NICS). Because of their radical character, these compounds may exhibit conflicting α/ß aromaticity, so that the contribution of α and β electrons to the MCI and NICS has been analysed separately and their values qualitatively interpreted in terms of the 2n+1/2n rule. All the monocyclic radicals investigated show conflicting α/β aromaticity.

A series of new arecoline derivatives containing amino acid fragments were synthesized, and their fungicidal activities were investigated. All synthesized compounds were characterized by H NMR, CNMR, and HRMS. Preliminary bioactivity assays demonstrated that Compounds 3k, 3n, 3p, 3q, 3r, and 3s exhibited significant antifungal activity against Botryosphaeria cactivora, Botryosphaeria dothidea, and Fusarium pseudograminearum at a concentration of 100 μg/mL.

Unlabelled: Gram-negative bacteria play a pivotal role in the bioremediation of persistent organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Because the outer membrane (OM) of these bacteria hinders the direct permeation of hydrophobic substances into the cells, trans-OM proteins are required for the uptake of PAHs. However, neither the characteristics of PAH transporters nor the specific transport mechanism has been well interpreted.
