, an opportunistic pathogen, has the ability to form biofilms in the host or within medical devices in the body. Biofilms have been associated with disseminated/invasive disease with increased severity of infection by disrupting the host immune response and prolonging antifungal treatment. In this study, the virulence of three strains with different biofilm formation strengths, that is, non-, weak-, and strong biofilm formers, was evaluated using the zebrafish model.

A Porcine Sepsis Model With Numerical Scoring for Early Prediction of Severity.

Front Med (Lausanne)

May 2022

Institute of Surgical Research, Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical School, University of Szeged, Szeged, Hungary.

Introduction: Sepsis can lead to organ dysfunctions with disturbed oxygen dynamics and life-threatening consequences. Since the results of organ-protective treatments cannot always be transferred from laboratory models into human therapies, increasing the translational potential of preclinical settings is an important goal. Our aim was to develop a standardized research protocol, where the progression of sepsis-related events can be characterized reproducibly in model experiments within clinically-relevant time frames.

Biological and Genetic Heterogeneity in Isolates from Hematophagous and Insectivorous Bats.

Pathogens

September 2020

Laboratório de Vigilância em Leishmanioses, Instituto Nacional de Infectologia Evandro Chagas, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro 21040-360, Brazil.

This study describes the morphological, biochemical, and molecular differences among isolates from hemocultures of hematophagous (; = 2) and insectivorous (; = 1) bats from the Atlantic Rainforest of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fusiform epimastigotes from the hematophagous isolates were elongated, whereas those of the insectivorous isolate were stumpy, reflected in statistically evident differences in the cell body and flagellum lengths. In the hemocultures, a higher percentage of trypomastigote forms (60%) was observed in the hematophagous bat isolates than that in the isolate from the insectivorous bat (4%), which demonstrated globular morphology.

Introduction: Blood cultures are the best diagnostic tool for the detection of bacteremia. However, false positive results may lead to confusion about antibiotic regimens, putting the lives of patients at risk. The main purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of coagulase negative Staphylococci (CoNS) as well as of Corynebacterium spp and Bacillus spp in the bags of blood culture analyzed in the microbiology laboratory at the Ibn-Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca.

[Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis associated with erythema nodosum].

Ann Dermatol Venereol

September 2019

Service de dermatologie, hôpital Nord Franche-Comté, 100, route de Moval 90400 Trévenans, France.

Background: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare, chronic, granulomatous, inflammatory disorder with potentially misleading clinical and radiological features. IGM is diagnosed after exclusion of infectious or tumoral diseases. Herein we report a case of erythema nodosum associated with IGM, which serves as a reminder that erythema nodosum may constitute an extra-mammary sign of IGM.
