Influence of Messa di Voce speed on vocal stability of untrained, healthy subjects.

PLoS One

January 2025

Division of Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Munich University Hospital (LMU), Munich, Germany.

Introduction: Despite its importance in voice training, comprehensive research into sustained vowel phonation with constant pitch and increasing and decreasing loudness, the so-called Messa di Voce, is lacking. The study examines the laryngeal behavior during Messa di Voce, regarding the impact of the speed of execution on voice stability parameters.

Materials And Methods: Nine untrained, healthy subjects (5 female, 4 male) were asked to perform Messa di Voce exercises on the vowel [i:], involving a gradual increase and decrease of volume.

Quantum chemical studies of carbon-based graphene-like nanostructures: from benzene to coronene.

J Mol Model

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Espírito Santo, Av. Min. Salgado Filho, Vila Velha, 29106-010, Espírito Santo, Brazil.

Context: This study presents quantum chemical analysis of 14 distinct carbon-based nanostructures (CBN), ranging from simple molecules, like benzene, to more complex structures, such as coronene, which serves as an exemplary graphene-like model. The investigation focuses on elucidating the relationships between molecular orbital (MO) energies, the energy band gaps, electron occupation numbers (eON), electronic conduction, and the compound topologies, seeking to find the one that approaches most of a graphene-like structure for in silico studies. Through detailed examination of molecular properties including chemical hardness and chemical potential, we demonstrate that the electronic exchange between orbitals is directly influenced by the structural topology of the carbon-based nanostructures, as the electron occupation numbers and the molecular orbital energies.

Objective: To assess and compare the diagnostic accuracy of radiologist, MR findings, and radiomics-clinical models in the diagnosis of placental implantation disorders.

Methods: Retrospective collection of MR images from patients suspected of having placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) was conducted across three institutions: Institution I (n = 505), Institution II (n = 67), and Institution III (n = 58). Data from Institution I were utilized to form a training set, while data from Institutions II and III served as an external test set.

Article Synopsis
  • There is an increasing interest in using capillary blood sampling to measure drugs, specifically phosphatidylethanol (PEth) as a biomarker for alcohol intake.
  • The study aimed to adapt an existing method for quantifying PEth in venous blood to also work with dried blood spots collected using two different volumetric absorptive microsampling devices, Capitainer®B and Mitra®.
  • The Mitra device met all validation criteria for PEth measurement, while the Capitainer device had a slight accuracy issue for higher PEth levels, but overall both devices were deemed suitable for analyzing PEth in capillary blood.

Water impact analysis due to coal-electricity generation using the life cycle assessment method: a case study in Malaysia.

Water Sci Technol

January 2025

Department of Engineering, School of Engineering and Technology, Sunway University, Bandar Sunway, Petaling, Jaya 47500, Malaysia.

Coal power plants adversely impact air pollution, but they also pose a risk to our water sources. Discharge wastewater from power plants may degrade the quality of nearby water bodies. This study evaluates the potential water-related environmental impacts of electricity generation at an ultra-supercritical coal power plant in Malaysia using the life cycle assessment method.
