Traumatic direct type carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) is an acquired arteriovenous shunt between the carotid artery and the cavernous sinus post severe craniofacial trauma or iatrogenic injury. We reported a 46-year-old woman who had developed a traumatic direct type CCF after severe head trauma with a skull base fracture and brain contusion hemorrhage. The clinical manifestations of the patient included pulsatile exophthalmos, proptosis, bruits, chemosis, and a decline in consciousness.

Multi-Omics Approaches to Discover Biomarkers of Thyroid Eye Disease: A Systematic Review.

Int J Biol Sci

December 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, No.639, Zhizaoju Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an organ-specific autoimmune disorder that significantly impacts patients' visual function, appearance, and well-being. Despite existing clinical evaluation methods, there remains a need for objective biomarkers to facilitate clinical management and pathogenesis investigation. Rapid advances in multi-omics technologies have enabled the discovery and development of more informative biomarkers for clinical use.

Background: For the selective detection of thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibodies with stimulating properties (thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins; TSI), a novel and rapid bioassay (Turbo TSI) has been introduced. We evaluate the clinical performance of Turbo TSI in Graves' orbitopathy (GO) patients and compare it to a bridge-based TSI binding immunoassay and third generation TSH-R-binding inhibitory immunoglobulins (TBII) assay. Also, we investigate the association of Turbo TSI and TBII measurements with GO activity and severity, as well as response to intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP), and compare results to previous findings on the bridge-based TSI binding immunoassay.

: This study investigates the relationship between thyroid eye disease (TED) and open-angle glaucoma (OAG), focusing on disease severity and clinical features. : Conducted at the Timis County Emergency Clinical Hospital, the research included 106 patients, with 53 having both conditions and 53 having only OAG. Key metrics analyzed included intraocular pressure (IOP) using a Goldmann applanation tonometer, the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, and optic nerve head (ONH) characteristics evaluated using optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Case report: thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, an unusual cause of hypokalemia.

Acta Clin Belg

June 2024

Department of Nephrology and Endocrinology, AZ Turnhout, Turnhout, Belgium.

: Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a type of hypokalemic periodic paralysis that is caused by an underlying thyrotoxicosis. It is a rare cause of hypokalemia due to intracellular potassium shift, causing acute muscle weakness.: We present a case of a 19-year-old male of Thai descent with acute proximal symmetric lower limb weakness.
