Bayesian deep learning applied to diabetic retinopathy with uncertainty quantification.

Heliyon

January 2025

Information Technology Department, Technical College of Informatics-Akre, Akre University for Applied Sciences, Kurdistan Regain, Iraq.

Deep Learning (DL) has significantly contributed to the field of medical imaging in recent years, leading to advancements in disease diagnosis and treatment. In the case of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), DL models have shown high efficacy in tasks such as classification, segmentation, detection, and prediction. However, DL model's opacity and complexity lead to errors in decision-making, particularly in complex cases, making it necessary to estimate the model's uncertainty in predictions.

Deep learning-based algorithm for classifying high-resolution computed tomography features in coal workers' pneumoconiosis.

Biomed Eng Online

January 2025

Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, National Health Commission Key Laboratory of Pneumoconiosis, Shanxi Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases, First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, No. 85 Jiefang South Road, Taiyuan, 030001, Shanxi, People's Republic of China.

Background: Coal workers' pneumoconiosis is a chronic occupational lung disease with considerable pulmonary complications, including irreversible lung diseases that are too complex to accurately identify via chest X-rays. The classification of clinical imaging features from high-resolution computed tomography might become a powerful clinical tool for diagnosing pneumoconiosis in the future.

Methods: All chest high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) medical images presented in this work were obtained from 217 coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) patients and dust-exposed workers.

Anterior segment dysgenesis (ASD) defines a collection of congenital eye disorders that affect structures within the anterior segment of the eye. Mutations in genes that initiate and regulate the complex pathways involved in eye development can cause a spectrum of disorders such as ASD, congenital cataracts and corneal opacity. In South Africa, causes of ASD are poorly understood with few studies looking at the possible genetic basis for these disorders.

Anterior segment dysgenesis exerts its influence on a diverse array of ocular structures, encompassing the cornea, iris, ciliary body, anterior chamber and lens. We present a 20-month-old boy with bilateral corneal opacity. The visual acuity (VA) was 6/480 in both eyes.

Topography-guided, patterned, customized corneal crosslinking for non-invasive astigmatism correction.

Eye (Lond)

January 2025

Bio-manufacturing Engineering Laboratory, International Graduate School at Shenzhen, Tsinghua University, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Objectives: To propose and evaluate a novel, non-invasive approach for enduring corneal astigmatism correction based on topography-guided, patterned, customized riboflavin-ultraviolet A corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL).

Methods: Astigmatism was modelled on both eyes of rabbits. A randomly selected eye of each rabbit was treated by the proposed CXL procedure with another eye as control.
