Solid-state nanopores (ssNPs) are single-molecule sensors capable of label-free quantification of different biomolecules, which have become highly versatile with the introduction of different surface treatments. By modulating the surface charges of the ssNP, the electro-osmotic flow (EOF) can be controlled in turn affecting the in-pore hydrodynamic forces. Herein, we demonstrate that negative charge surfactant coating to ssNPs generates EOF that slows-down DNA translocation speed by >30-fold, without deterioration of the NP noise, hence significantly improving its performances.

Gene Electrotransfer Efficiency in 2D and 3D Cancer Cell Models Using Different Electroporation Protocols: A Comparative Study.

Electroporation, a method relying on a pulsed electric field to induce transient cell membrane permeabilization, can be used as a non-viral method to transfer genes in vitro and in vivo. Such transfer holds great promise for cancer treatment, as it can induce or replace missing or non-functioning genes. Yet, while efficient in vitro, gene-electrotherapy remains challenging in tumors.

In order to modify the surface of light metals and alloys, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a useful electrochemical technique. During the oxidation process, by applying a positive high voltage greater than the dielectric breakdown value of the oxide layer, the formation of a ceramic film onto the substrate material is enabled. The resulting surface presents hardness, chemical stability, biocompatibility, and increased corrosion wear resistance.

Qualitative and quantitative aspects of time-, charge-, and mobility-based electropherograms.

Electrophoresis

December 2022

Department of Fundamental Chemistry, Institute of Chemistry, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

The migration process in capillary electrophoresis is obtained by using a high-voltage power supply, and the basic idea is to keep the control on the migration velocity of the analytes by controlling either the applied voltage or current. The effectiveness of this control has impact on the resulting electropherogram and, thus, in the identification and quantification of the analytes. Although the usual electropherogram is the record of the detector signal as a function of time, other two domains should be considered: charge and mobility.
