We investigated whether photoreceptor function in amblyopic eyes differed from that in non-amblyopic eyes. Photoreceptor function was assessed with the optical Stiles-Crawford effect (SCE), psychophysical SCE, and foveal visual pigment density in both eyes of ten unilateral amblyopic subjects. Optical SCE and density measurements were carried out with a custom-built scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO).

The relative luminous efficiency curves for light entering different parts of the entrance pupil [Stiles-Crawford functions (SCFs)] of subject TG, whose right eye is amblyopic, were determined earlier for both the normal and the amblyopic eye. The left eye was found to have a normal SCF, varying from the center to the edge of the entrance pupil by an entire log unit. However, the SCF for the right eye was found to be abnormal, showing peak sensitivity far toward the temporal edge of the pupil and varying from center to edge by only one-third of a log unit.

Retinal photoreceptor orientational tendencies were assessed within both eyes of samples of control and selected functional amblyopic observers, with the psychophysical Stiles-Crawford (S-C) function used as an indicator. S-C function determinations were made at testing locations spanning 30 degrees of the horizontal meridian of the visual field and including the forced region. Normal-appearing S-C functions with peak locations which clustered within a subregion of the pupil were found for all but one of the eyes tested.
