Background: The mucociliary clearance system driven by beating cilia protects the airways from inhaled microbes and particles. Large particles are cleared by mucus bundles made in submucosal glands by parallel linear polymers of the MUC5B mucins. However, the structural organization and function of the mucus generated in surface goblet cells are poorly understood.

Rationale: Probe-based confocal endomicroscopy provides real time videos of autoflourescent elastin structures within the alveoli. With it, multiple changes in the elastin structure due to different diffuse parenchymal lung diseases have previously been described. However, these evaluations have mainly relied on qualitative evaluation by the examiner and manually selected parts post-examination.

Background: Rigid bronchoscopy intubation poses a significant risk of complication to patients from mechanical trauma. Despite the importance of precision in forces exerted by surgeons during intubation, no prior study has analyzed the overall forces and torques involved in rigid bronchoscopy intubation, and whether existing training modalities accurately replicate them.
Methods: A bronchoscope was equipped with a 6-axis load sensor to measure forces and torques applied during rigid bronchoscopy intubation.

Background: Recruitment to clinical trials is suboptimal, increasing costs, and delaying the potential implementation of clinical advances. Among other barriers, the lack of marketing experience among trialists may limit recruitment. In this observational study, in the context of the Pan-Canadian Early Detection of Lung Cancer Trial, we assessed the value of a motivational survey of study participants in planning a tailored advertising campaign and analysed the value of individual components of advertising in generating telephone calls to the study and recruited subjects.

Background: Tracheal intubation in patients at risk for secondary spinal cord injury is potentially difficult and risky.
Objectives: To compare tracheal intubation techniques in adult patients at risk for secondary cervical spinal cord injury undergoing surgery. Primary outcome was first-attempt failure rate.
