Persistent hiccups are rare but can serve as an early symptom of underlying conditions, including pulmonary infections and cerebrovascular disorders. This case highlights hiccups as a presenting symptom of bronchopneumonia in a hemodialysis patient and explores the effective use of chlorpromazine and Hange-koboku-to (HKT) as symptomatic therapies. Given the potential association of hiccups with neurological conditions, this case underscores the need for comprehensive diagnostic evaluation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the protective effects of pentoxifylline, lovastatin, and chlorpromazine against kidney damage caused by ischemia and reperfusion in animals.
  • A total of 36 male animals were divided into four groups, with one group receiving no treatment and the others treated with one of the three substances.
  • Results showed that while chlorpromazine was effective in the short term, pentoxifylline was the most effective overall in preserving kidney structure, with all three treatments ultimately demonstrating effectiveness.

Hiccups, a common and usually self-limiting condition, are caused by involuntary, spasmodic contractions of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, followed by the sudden closure of the glottis. While most cases resolve spontaneously, persistent hiccups (lasting 48 hours to one month) and intractable hiccups (lasting more than one month) require medical attention. Intractable hiccups, although rare, can significantly impair a patient's quality of life.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored using high-flow regional cerebral perfusion (HFRCP) in newborns undergoing aortic arch reconstruction, focusing on monitoring thigh oxygen levels to improve kidney protection.
  • A total of 28 infants were analyzed between 2009 and 2021, with a median age of 27 days, and perfusion flow rates were adjusted to maintain brain and kidney health during surgery.
  • Results indicated no major neurological issues post-surgery, but 39.3% experienced acute kidney injury, suggesting that thigh oxygen saturation levels (rSO2T) below 48% predicted worsening kidney function.

Lithium carbonate is used to increase white blood cell counts as a means of counteracting leukopenia caused by the administration of antipsychotic drugs. To evaluate the effect of antipsychotics on the leukocyte-enhancing effect of lithium, we compared white blood cell counts, serum lithium levels, and lithium dosage in patients receiving antipsychotics and lithium in combination and patients receiving lithium alone. Chlorpromazine equivalent values were used as an indicator of the antipsychotic dose.
